Public order offence was a five on a scale of 1 to 10

On a scale of one to ten, how bad was the public order offence before him, a Judge asked the prosecuting Garda when the case came before him at Balinasloe District Court.

Judge James Faughnan asked the question of Sgt Christy Brown when dealing with a charge faced by Sean Griffin, 34 Hymany Park, Ballinasloe. Sgt Brown said it merited around a five on that scale.

Griffin was found by Gardaí lying on the footpath in a highly intoxicated condition. The Judge was told Griffin had 16 previous convictions, the most recent from Galway Circuit Court where he received a two-years suspended sentence for providing false information to Gardaí. His solicitor said his client “had been doing well.”

Judge Faughnan imposes a fine of €200.
