SHEroes 2025: Sustaining momentum in leadership

Empowering women, young people, and diverse communities in politics

SHEroes 2025 returns for its second year with the inspiring theme “Sustaining Momentum in Leadership,” a call to action to empower and encourage the participation of women, young people, and people from diverse backgrounds in politics and civic life.

The SHEroes 2025 Symposium will take place on 9th October at the Radisson Red Hotel, Galway, from 10:00am–3:00pm and will be the highlight of this year’s programme. Building on the outcomes of last year’s groundbreaking event, the symposium will bring together a remarkable lineup of speakers to share insights, inspire action, and encourage greater participation in leadership and decision-making.

We’re bringing together an inspiring lineup of speakers including Dr. Niloufar Omidi, Dr. Malie Coyne, Megan Flynn Dixon (See Her Elected ), Kathleen O’Meara, Sinéad McMahon, Cllr. Uruemu Adejinmi, Cllr Honore Kamegni, Liliana Fernadez and many more. Together, they will explore mental wellbeing, mentoring, preparing for politics, civic participation, and the power of inclusive representation—all to ensure more women, young people, and diverse communities take their place in leadership.

Alongside the symposium, SHEroes has engaged with young people through workshops on political participation and will continue this work with more workshops in secondary schools, supporting the next generation of leaders and encouraging early civic engagement.

“SHEroes is not just an event, it’s a movement,” said Cllr. Helen Ogbu, Convener and Founder of SHEroes. “We are sustaining the momentum created last year by encouraging more women, young people, and diverse communities to step into leadership roles and take part in shaping Galway’s future. Our communities are diverse, but this diversity has not been reflected in our political and civic leadership.”

In addition, SHEroes is developing a practical toolkit to help Galway City Council engage more effectively with citizens from diverse backgrounds, further supporting participation and accountability in local government.

Organised by SAOL Connect, and supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage and Galway City Council, SHEroes was created to support and empower women and diverse communities in politics and local government.
