The 12 cases mentioned last week as being under review involving concerns about maternity care at Portiuncula University Hospital in Galway do not include any new cases.

Two cases confirmed last week by HSE Chief Bernard Gloster to be under review are two of the original 12 cases already under external review and therefore not additional to those already being examined.

These two cases include a stillbirth in May and another instance of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy reported in July, where a newborn experienced a lack of oxygen or blood supply to the brain.

Local Sinn Fein TDs have criticised the absence of the Health Minister in the Dáil this week for questions on the maternity services at Portiuncula.

Roscommon/Galway TD Claire Kerrane and Galway East TD Louis O'Hara both spoke on the issue last night but expressed their disappointment they could not voice their concerns to Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.
