MADRA’s much-loved annual fundraising event, Doing It For The Dogs, takes place on Sunday, September 21, from 11am to 3pm at the Claddagh Hall. A highlight of the local calendar, the day brings together families, dog lovers, and the wider community to celebrate pets while raising vital funds for dogs still waiting for their forever homes.
This year marks the welcome return of the Dogathon, one of MADRA’s most popular fundraisers. Walkers can enjoy the stunning Salthill Prom with their dogs, choosing their preferred distance before returning to the Claddagh Hall for refreshments, fun, and community spirit. With staggered start times, the Dogathon is relaxed, inclusive, and the perfect outing for two- and four-legged friends alike. Full details and registration are available on MADRA’s website and social media channels, where participants can also set up fundraising pages to support the cause.
Back at the Claddagh Hall, there will be plenty to enjoy throughout the day. Children can join in a special child-friendly Dogathon, a teddy bear’s picnic, and face painting. Visitors can browse stalls packed with treats and crafts for both dogs and humans, sample homemade cakes, enter the raffle, and pick up official MADRA merchandise, including the ‘hot off the press’ 2026 Calendars. Petstop Knocknacarra will also be on-site from 11am with free goodie bags (while stocks last ).
For dog owners, MADRA will offer a discounted microchipping service (€25 ) along with a free “scan and check” for already-chipped dogs to ensure details are up to date. With one in three pets going missing each year, microchipping is the safest and most effective way to bring lost pets home. It’s quick, simple, and has been a legal requirement for dogs in Ireland since 2015. Owners just need to bring their dog, photo ID, and a recent utility bill.
This year’s event will also highlight Galway City Council’s “Love Your Dog, Love Your City” campaign, promoting responsible pet ownership and celebrating the special bond between people and their dogs. All dogs taking part in the Dogathon will sport a special limited-edition hi-vis jacket, courtesy of the Council, keeping them safe and looking cool.
With a never-ending stream of abandoned and surrendered dogs, Doing It For The Dogs is more important than ever in supporting MADRA’s rescue and rehoming work.
