Frank Kirrane will become the first Connacht player to represent Ireland in the European Pickleball Championships which takes place at Foro Italico Sports Complex in Rome from September 19-21.
Originally from Tuam and now living in Gort, Kirrane discovered pickleball by chance at the Gort Community Centre three years ago in one of a number of introductory sessions organised by Galway County Pickleball club. He explains that pickleball "keeps you fit, engaged, and part of a welcoming club community".
"What drew me to pickleball is that it’s a healthy mix of social recreation and sport, with opportunities to play competitively if you want," Kirrane added.
Over the past three years, Galway County Pickleball Club has grown to more than 150 members across six venues, supported by a hardworking committee and volunteers. Earlier this year, the club proudly hosted the first Pickleball Ireland Connacht Provincial Open, which attracted players from across the country and highlighted the sport’s growing popularity.
While Frank never imagined competing at national level, pickleball has opened doors. "The beauty of the sport is that no matter what level you aspire to, there’s an avenue for you. Some of the best games I’ve had have been at club tournaments and interclub 'tournavals', where you meet fantastic people in an inclusive, supportive environment."
Now, representing Ireland on the Seniors Pickleball squad in Rome, he reflects on the unexpected journey. "When I strolled into Gort Community Centre three years ago, I never thought I’d end up here. I’m grateful to Galway County Pickleball Club, my pickleball friends, and everyone who’s encouraged me along the way. This is a shared achievement", he concluded.
