Galway’s historic Druid Lane will come alive with voices, music, and stories on Saturday, August 23 as the city gathers to honour the life and legacy of Peadar O’Dowd, the beloved historian, author, and champion of Galway’s heritage.
Hosted by Galway Civic Trust, the Peadar O’Dowd Memorial Day will take place across two remarkable venues: the Mick Lally Theatre and the medieval Hall of the Red Earl. Throughout the day, the programme will blend history, poetry, music, and film.
At 2pm, O’Dowd’s long-time friend and former student, historian William Henry, will deliver a personal tribute in the Mick Lally Theatre. The talk will be attended by Mayor Mike Cubbard and guest of honour Mary O’Dowd, whose presence will make the occasion deeply special.
Throughout the day, audiences can enjoy historical talks from leading Galway voices, exploring the city’s roots, fortifications, and forgotten places; a screening of Ag Trasnú An Atlantaigh Dhuibh, the TG4 documentary connecting Galway to transatlantic history; and live music from local favourites including The Kelly Family, Bernard Naughton’s Band, Mick Brown, the Galway Ukulele Group, and Cór na dTreabh.
There will also be an open-mic poetry session at the Hall of the Red Earl, hosted by Skylight 47 Poetry — a space for words and memories to flow freely.
Meanwhile, archaeological tours led by Galway Civic Trust guides will reveal the secrets of the Hall of the Red Earl.
“Peadar had a gift for making history feel alive,” says Galway Civic Trust guide Ronan Harvey. “This day is about doing the same — sharing his stories, the city’s stories, and our own stories with each other.”
