The Ros Muc Area Genealogy and DNA group is hosting the sixth annual Connemara Gathering next week as part of Heritage Week.

The weekend-long gathering, taking place at Gairmscoil na bPiarsach, will see a range of speakers discussing local heritage and genealogy over three days.

The gathering begins at 5pm on Friday, August 22 with a tea/coffee reception, followed by a talk that evening on the Joyces from Camus, given by Páraic Ó Súilleabháin. The talk will be followed by music and entertainment on Friday evening.

Saturday will see a day of talks. The day starts with tea and coffee at 11am, followed by a talk at 12 noon by John O’Halloran on the people and farm animals of Connemara. Noel Murphy will discuss Y-DNA and tracing Irish surnames, followed by Mártán O’Halloran on conquering genealogical barriers.

Saturday’s programme will finish with a talk by Tomás Mac Con Iomaire on Bruce Ismay and Costello Lodge. Saturday’s programme also includes lunch during the day, and attendees will also gather for dinner on Saturday evening, though this is not included as part of the programme.

Speakers on Sunday include Jim Hollarn on Connemara genealogy and DNA; Edward O’Loghlen on the history of the O’Loghlens, and a workshop event where attendees can access help with their DNA and/or family trees.

The event, which always attracts a good attendance, is free to attend and booking is not required. For more information on the Connemara Gathering, see the Ros Muc area genealogy and DNA group on Facebook for more information.
