The 80th anniversaries of the atomic bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be marked at a special event at the Spanish Arch on Wednesday, August 6, at 7.30pm.

The Galway Alliance Against War (GAAW ) will hold a peace vigil and host guest speaker Tadhg Hickey. The event marks the 80th anniversary of the only times nuclear weapons have been used in war, when the US bombed two cities in August 1945, killing an estimated 210,000 people, contributing to Japan’s surrender in World War II.

Hickey, from Cork, is a well-known comedian and political satirist, with his short online videos on social and political topics wracking up more than 100 million views globally.

GAAW is currently organising a postcard campaign to lobby Galway West and Galway East TDs to support the Occupied Territories Bill, to be mailed this week.
