This Saturday, July 19, more than 150 swimmers will take to the waters of Galway Bay to complete the 13km crossing in the 20th Annual Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim — all in aid of Cancer Care West.
What began nearly two decades ago with Kevin Thornton, Ronan Collins and Simon Flatley, has grown into one of Ireland’s largest and most impactful open water charity swims. As the event celebrates its 20th anniversary, it continues to go from strength to strength, drawing incredible community support year after year.
Brian Thornton says this anniversary holds particular significance for me personally, as my three children are deeply involved in the organisation of the swim, which is named in memory of my late wife, Frances.
“It is a moment of immense pride and reflection. My two daughters Fiona and Claire and both swimming solo this year across the Bay.”
This remarkable event would not be possible without the unwavering dedication of the maritime community, whose provision of support boats ensures the safety and success of the swim. The event organisers are deeply indebted to them for their commitment and generosity.
Swimmers are on track to surpass the €100,000 fundraising milestone once again, helping Cancer Care West continue its vital work supporting cancer patients and their families across the West of Ireland.
They encourage the public to come out and show their support. Join the supporters at Blackrock on Saturday, where they expect to welcome the first swimmers from 12:00 PM onward. It is a day of inspiration, community spirit, and a celebration of 20 years of making waves for a cause that touches so many lives.
