New Galway City Centre parking initiative supports local rowing club

Visitors to Galway City Centre now have a new, convenient parking option — and a chance to support local youth sport in the process. The Bish Rowing Club has launched a fundraising initiative by managing the car park at St. Joseph’s “The Bish” Secondary School. Open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the car park provides centrally located parking for those attending the Galway International Arts Festival, the Galway Races, or simply enjoying a day of shopping, dining, or sightseeing.

All proceeds from the car park go directly to the Bish Rowing Club Boat Fund, which aims to replace the club’s ageing fleet of boats. As a school-based club with no external funding, the Bish Rowing Club relies entirely on the generosity of the community through initiatives like this to continue supporting young rowers.

Located in the school grounds at H91 C3X5, the car park offers a practical solution for visitors looking to avoid the hassle of city centre parking while also giving back to a grassroots sports organisation.

“This initiative is more than just parking — it’s a way for the public to directly contribute to the development of our young athletes,” a club spokesperson said. “Every car that parks here helps keep our rowing programme afloat.”

The Bish Rowing Club has a proud tradition in Galway, nurturing generations of student rowers. With the growing popularity of rowing among young people, the club hopes to expand access and improve training with updated equipment.

For those coming to town this summer, parking at The Bish means parking with a purpose — supporting sport, youth, and community.
