Galway’s newest centenarian, Angela Shaw, celebrated her milestone 100th birthday this week surrounded by family, friends, and staff at Clarinbridge Care Centre.
Born on July 1, 1925, in Galway, Angela was one of four siblings, growing up with her brother and two sisters. Her long life has been marked by service, creativity, and community spirit.
During World War II, Angela joined the British Army, where she worked as a dental nurse, serving with dedication and resilience. In 1949, Angela and the love of her life, Eugene, eloped to Limerick Cathedral to marry, beginning a partnership that spanned 54 happy years.
Angela has been a proud and active member of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA ) for nearly five decades. Renowned for her skills in crafts, she spent many years teaching and sharing her knowledge, inspiring generations of women.
She and Eugene were also members of the Variety Club of Ireland, dedicating their efforts to fundraising for disabled children. Their commitment to supporting others continued with their role in helping to found the Disabled Drivers Association, leaving a lasting legacy in their community.
Family has always been central to Angela’s life. She is the proud mother of two daughters, Evelyn and Phil, and her close-knit family extends to nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom continue to bring her joy.
Reflecting on her long and happy life, Angela shared her secret saying, “Stay active, keep busy, and drink plenty of tea.”
