Galway City East Councillor Shane Forde has requested traffic engineers to explore filter options for the Monivea Road junction opposite Thermo King and Crown Square.

The Fine Gael councillor says a similar system to what currently exists at the exit of the Liosban Industrial Estate would reduce congestion.

Forde suggests segregating traffic along the Monivea Road from traffic continuing to Old Mervue and onward to New Mervue.

“We have cars stuck in traffic at this junction every day that want to turn right, and have to wait until the traffic light goes green to allow this. This simple solution would allow those [drivers] who want to turn right towards Mervue do this, and free-up the volume of cars using this stretch of road’ said Forde.

“This situation is only going to get worse with the increased building taking place in the area, so any small changes that can be made like this to improve the situation should be looked at by the City Council,” he added.

City planners are expected to approve a 38-unit apartment building opposite Eir on the Monivea Road this month, while 345 apartments ar earmarked for Crown Square next door.
