West End works will 'significantly improve water quality ' say Uisce Éireann

Improvements to the West End's water supply are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Improvements to the West End's water supply are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

According to Uisce Éireann, the delivery of nearly 1.5 km of new water mains in the city's West End this summer will 'significantly improve water quality and reduce levels of leakage on the network'.

The works are being carried out under Uisce Éireann's National Leak Reduction Programme. According to the organisation, some sections of work will require temporary road closures, which have been approved by Galway City Council.

The first phase of works is set to take place along Palmyra Park (L-5117-0 ) and Raleigh Row (L-5110-0 ), resulting in road closures in the area from Monday, June 30, until Friday, August 1.

Traffic flows will be diverted during this time, but local and emergency access will always be maintained. The diversion route for Palmyra Park will be via the R-337-4, the R-864-16, and the L-5109-0. The diversion route for Raleigh Row will be via the L-5113-1, the R-337-2, the L-5115-0, and the L-5111-0.

The works may involve some short-term water outages, but Uisce Éireann has confirmed that its project team will 'ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice before any planned outages. Any temporary traffic management measures which may also be required during the period of works will also be communicated ahead of time, as will homeowners whose properties will be directly impacted by the improvement works.

Reliable supply

Enda Mac Namara, programme manager with Uisce Éireann, said the works will significantly reduce the volume of clean water lost to underground leakage and provide a more reliable supply for customers in Galway city.

“This programme of works is necessary in order to improve water quality for Uisce Éireann customers in the area. The works will also reduce instances of low pressure and other service disruptions on the network, by replacing old and deteriorating mains with new, modern pipework,” said Enda.

“We acknowledge that the works will create some disruption for residents and businesses in the area, and we wish to thank affected customers for their patience in advance of the works. Our crews will work as quickly and as diligently as possible to complete the programme of works.”

The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.?
