Fine Gael Councillor Clodagh Higgins has called on Galway City Council to conduct an immediate citywide audit of road line markings and improve enforcement signage, following growing safety concerns from local residents and commuters.
Cllr. Higgins, who represents Galway City West, said that key road markings, including yellow boxes, stop lines, directional arrows, and bus pull-in bays have faded so badly in many areas that they are now almost invisible, particularly at busy junctions.
“This is no longer just an issue of maintenance, it’s a matter of safety,” said Cllr. Higgins. “Drivers are struggling to navigate junctions due to missing or worn out markings. “In particular, faded yellow boxes and the complete lack of enforcement signage are leading to dangerous and frustrating driving conditions.”
She also raised the issue of yellow box junctions being misused and stated that “there is virtually no signage reminding drivers that they must not enter a yellow box unless the exit is clear,” she added. “Without visible road markings or clear signs, these boxes are being ignored, causing blockages, gridlock, and serious safety risks, especially at peak times.”
“With tourist season ramping up and more people on our roads, Galway City cannot afford to let this slide. We need clearly marked roads, visible signage, and a traffic system that puts safety first,” she concluded.
