The pedestrianisation of streets in Galway’s West End went ahead this week, after last-minute negotiations between local traders, a city councillor and a transport activist means outdoor dancing and dining can go ahead.
An application to the High Court by a private individual for judicial review of Galway City Council’s road closure orders was withdrawn last Friday, after a deal was agreed to improve signage for cyclists.
Henry Street and Dominick Street in Galway’s West End are part of Section 26 of Euro Velo 1, a European cycling route linking Norway, Britain, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal, and it is understood this aspect of the temporary pedestrianisation would be contested in a legal action. The complaint related to the process behind the Road Closure Orders and signage, rather than any objection to outdoor dining itself.
Speaking after confirmation that the legal complaint was dropped, Councillor Eibhlín Seoighthe (SD ) said temporary road closures could now proceed for the summer.
“This is a positive and very welcome development for the people and businesses of Galway’s West end. I’m glad to have played a role in facilitating constructive conversations that helped bring about this resolution,” she said.
“Community Corridors are a key part of creating a more liveable, people-friendly city - something I’ve long advocated for. I know how frustrating the delay was for traders and residents, especially with the summer season upon us, and I want to thank everyone who engaged in good faith to find a way forward.”
“This is proof that when we listen, when we communicate, and when we act in the interest of the whole community, we can find solutions. I look forward to seeing the West End come alive this summer and will continue to work towards a more accessible and inclusive Galway,” she said.
