Celebrate Biodiversity Week with Friends of Merlin Woods

Friends of Merlin Woods will host several events for Biodiversity Week this year. The group is also working with others to promote biodiversity this year in the woodlands and the city.

These include Discovering Butterflies, Bumblebees and Dragonflies with Colin Stanley, a family fun event Saturday May 17 from 12-2pm.

Botanical Art with Debbie Reilly, taking place on Sunday May 18 from 12-2pm, is open to all ages, but spaces are limited.

Woodburning and Signing with Merlin College and artist Debbie Reilly on Monday May 19 is a closed event.

Galway Sports Partnership and Health Galway is holding a six-week Nature for Health evening programme commencing on May 19 from 7-9pm. More information and bookings are available through Galway Sports Partnership.

On Tuesday May 20 at 7pm, Wild Justice Galway City will take place in Nuns Island Theatre. This event is a collaboration between Galway City Council Biodiversity Officer, Friends of Merlin Woods and Foroige, an educational piece of original theatre from Merlin Woods Collective. A story of Wildlife versus Humans in the court of wild justice, expert witnesses, and the audience as the jury. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

On Wednesday May 21 from 12-1pm three classes from Radharc na Mara, Mervue Primary School will perform their original songs from the Music in Nature Music Generation Programme, hosted by Merlin Woods Community Garden. This will also be the first school music performance held in this beautiful amphitheatre space. Everyone is welcome.

Later that evening at 9.30pm Galway Bat Group will lead a Bat Walk through Merlin Woods.

Families can enjoy a family walk, Discovering Nature with Caroline Stanley, on Saturday May 24 from 11-1pm. This event is accessible to all.

Discover Orchids and Wildflowers with Ciaran Bruton on Sunday May 25 from 11-1pm. This is a season of wildflowers, and one of the best times of year for spotting the amazing array of wildflowers in the woodland habitats and learn all about the plants seen along the way.

All events commence at Merlin Woods Community Garden unless otherwise stated.
