Funding has been approved for new bus shelters for Bearna and Oughterard, a move which has been welcomed by Fianna Fáil Galway West TD, John Connolly.
News of the funding was revealed to Dep Connolly following enquiries he made to Galway County Council after receiving “multiple representations” from constituents in both villages.
“Many people in Bearna and Oughterard have been asking for bus shelters for inbound journey services to Galway City,” He said. “The approval of funding is an important step towards making this happen.”
The Active Travel team in the County Council’s Roads Department is responsible for delivering the National Transport Authority-funded Bus Stop Enhancement Programme. The team is currently assessing suitable sites for the location of the shelters.
Now that funding has been approved, the shelters can move towards the design stage. The design and delivery of the works will be carried out by Galway County Council and the National Transport Authority, while the design will be subject to the Road Safety Authority’s road safety audits. Once all approvals are received, a design package will be prepared and put forward for tender.
“I encourage the Galway County Council to process the design and work for the bus shelters as fast as possible,” said Dep Connolly. “There is a demand for public transport services from people in both villages. Providing the shelters at the earliest opportunity will be an important way to solidify that support.”
