Twenty years after introducing the black-headed Zwartbles sheep to Ireland, with their distinctive white blaze, an event will celebrate the anniversary in Galway this Sunday.
The Zwartbles Sheep Breeders of Ireland will host an open day on Sunday, April 27, at Paul Conroy’s family farm in Woodford, Co Galway, from 10:45am.
The breed is known for its ease of maintenance, strong maternal qualities and a striking, zebra-like appearance with its black wool and white blaze.
The Conroy Farm open day will include competitions, demonstrations and talks from international experts.
“Zwartbles are perfect for modern-day sheep farmers, either full-time or part-time. They also fit well into commercial systems, meeting slaughter weights efficiently and are constantly hitting R and U grades,” said Conroy, who has a flock of over 200 Zwartbles.
