Parking meter row hits Council coffers

Income to the city from car parking charges was down €86,000 during the first two months of the year.

The Galway City Council audit reports show parking receipts down a whopping €70,000 during January, when parking meters would not accept coins, and the local authority initiated a grace period of almost two weeks.

A contract row between UTS Technologies, which had managed Galway’s parking apparatus since 2018, and the local authority, prompted the payment snarl for 90 machines across the city.

Officials told councillors last week that issues remain with eight parking metres, with six of them requiring significant remediation to get up and running again.

In December last year, the council introduced a new app so motorists do not need to use parking meters, or pay in shops.
