Speed ramps are soon to be introduced on Abbey Street, Loughrea. The ramps are being funded by Independent Ireland Councillor Declan Kelly, who says the problem of vehicles speeding is ‘getting completely out of hand’.

Cllr Kelly said: "Some months ago, I handed into the Loughrea Council Area Office a petition signed by over 200 people calling for steps to be taken in relation to speeding on Abbey Street, with some motorists using the street as a quick route to the motorway every morning.

"Having recently facilitated a meeting between the senior engineer and local residents, there was general agreement that the most effective measure we could take was to install speed ramps and to expedite that work, I have agreed to fund these ramps out of my own discretionary budget for engineering works.

"Residents and business owners on Abbey Street have been calling for these ramps for years and I am happy to be in a position to fund them.

"This will help with traffic-calming along this artery, but we have to look at all other measures for streets, avenues and residential areas in Loughrea and across the constituency because the problem of vehicles speeding is getting completely out of hand.

"Ultimately it comes down to driver behaviour, but we can try to mitigate the dangers of that behaviour in our towns and villages and the work on Abbey Street will help do that."
