Galway will be looking to continue their winning start to the league campaign this weekend as they go to Waterford on Saturday, March 1 with throw-in at 2pm.

The Galway Senior Camogie team got their league campaign off to winning ways last Saturday when they overcame Kilkenny by two points in Dunmore Training Centre. The game which was originally meant to be held in Nowlan Park but was switched to Dunmore on Friday due to the pitch falling foul to the harsh weather conditions that battered the country last week.

It was the Kittens who started the brightest with points from Miriam Bambrick and Katie Nolan in the opening four minutes. Sabina Rabbitte got the visitors off the mark by the fifth minute with a well taken point from play. But it was the hosts who continued to extend their lead throughout the half with points from Nolan, Asha McHardy and Katie Byrne to leave Kilkenny 0-5 to 0-1 ahead by the eighth minute.

Niamh Mallon and the Galway captain for the 2025 season, Carrie Dolan, brought the deficit back to two when they slotted over two well taken scores from play. Aoife Prendergast got her name on the score sheet when she slotted over two points, one through a free but it was the Tribeswomen who finished the strongest with points from the Clarinbridge duo Dolan and Niamh Niland as Kilkenny went in 0-7 to 0-5 in front at the break.

Galway knew that a big second-half was needed if they were to get a win. The introduction of substitute Ailish O’Reilly was instrumental in the victory for Galway as she pointed three second-half points.

Prendergast got Kilkenny of the mark two minutes into the second-half with a free. Galway kicked on however with five unanswered points through Mairead Dillion, Ailish O’Reilly, Sabina Rabbitte and two Dolan frees two give Galway the lead for the first time in the game by the 50th minute.

Prendergast tried to keep Kilkenny in touch with frees but it wasn’t enough as Olwen Rabbitte and two more O’Reilly points ensured that Galway would come away with the points.

Murray will be happy with his side. With some key players still missing, he will be happy to have come away with the victory against a strong Kilkenny side.

Galway now face another away trip to next weekend when they make the long trip to Waterford. They will be hoping to make it two wins from two to keep their hopes of making a league final alive.
