More than €47.5 million worth of Government funding has been approved for Galway regional and local roads, accosding to Fianna Fáil Senator Anne Rabbitte.
Senator Rabbitte’s Fianna Fáil colleague Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien announced an investment programme of €713 million for regional and local roads in 2025. This represents an overall increase of over 8% in funding this year for road and safety improvements on the vast interconnected regional and local road network.
Some €43.6 million has been allocated for regional and local roads in Galway county in 2025, while €3.9 million has been approved or regional and local roads in Galway city.
Welcoming the funding Galway Senator Rabbitte said she is delighted to see €770,000 being allocated for the rehabilitation works for the former N65.
"I have long campaigned for this route to be upgraded. I’m also pleased that €915,000 has been allocated to Galway County Council for speed limit review signs. Reducing speed limits on our roads will allow for more active travel measures to be implemented.
“We know what a difference improved infrastructure can make to local towns and villages and communities. This funding will allow for improved road safety and will result in reduced journey times.
“Fianna Fáil in Government will prioritise investment in our rural road infrastructure in the next five years."
Announcing the investment Minister O’Brien said: “My main priority is the ongoing maintenance and renewal of the regional and local road network, alongside strategic investment in developing and improving the road infrastructure network.
“Rehabilitation and maintenance is fundamental to keeping the network in a good condition, and a significant increase in funding has been provided for in 2025, with most of the funding going towards restoration of the network. This is essential for maintaining social and economic connectivity, linking people and places across the country," she added.
