Allen O’Leary, from Headford, is gearing up to face the gruelling Marathon Des Sables 2025, often dubbed the ‘toughest footrace on earth’. This incredible challenge will see him cross the Sahara desert over 11 days, including nine days entirely off-grid with no access to running water, electricity, or modern conveniences. He will carry up to 15kg of food, medical supplies, and sleeping equipment while tackling a 250km course, including a daunting 85km stage.

Allen is not just facing the scorching sands and physical demands of the race; he is also taking on this monumental challenge to raise vital funds for the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust.

Allen says: “I feel compelled to take on this challenge to raise both awareness and funds for a cause close to my heart. The Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust provides crucial support to those undergoing life-saving bone marrow transplants at St James’s Hospital in Dublin.”

The trust offers accommodation for patients and their families during treatment, a service Allen believes is invaluable: “As someone who has witnessed first-hand the emotional and physical toll of blood cancers, I truly believe that the work of this charity is invaluable, providing comfort and a sense of community for those who need it most.”

The Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust focuses on four main areas of support:

Direct patient support: Providing financial and emotional assistance to patients.

Transplant unit and day care centre: Funding improvements and resources within the hospital.

Accommodation: Offering comfortable accommodation for patients and families near the hospital.

Research and development: Supporting research into better treatment methods for blood cancers.

Allen is calling on the public to support his fundraising efforts: “Any contribution, no matter how large or small, will make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing blood cancer and undergoing bone marrow transplants. Your generosity will help ensure that families in need have a place to stay during what is often a long and uncertain journey.”
