Loughrea Library launches Loughrea Project

The Loughrea Project, a collaboration between the Loughrea Library Craft Group and the Loughrea Men’s Shed, was officially launched in Loughrea Library, Church Street.

Using craft skills in textiles and wood, the project created representations of Loughrea lake, the crannógs of the lake and St Brendan’s boat.

They are grateful to the Arts Office of Galway County Council for funding this exciting project, which took eight months to complete and involved over 40 community members from both Loughrea groups.

The project is on display in Loughrea Library and the public are encouraged to pay a visit to the library to view the craftsmanship of each aspect of the project.

The Craft Group meets in the library each Thursday morning 11am-1pm, while the Men’s Shed meets on Wednesday mornings at 11am at their premises in Cross Street.

A spokesperson for the Library Service said this was a wonderful opportunity for the community to be involved in a collaborative project.

“There is a huge amount of creativity in Loughrea, it was an honour to get involved with these groups,” they said.
