Fine Gael Councillor and Mayor of Galway City Cllr. Eddie Hoare has welcomed the recent installation of floodlights in Westside Park. The lights were installed on the playing pitches licenced by St. Michael’s GAA club and have really added to the amenity.

The Minister for Rural & Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD recently opened a second round of funding under the Community Recognition Fund with over €1.7m being made available to Galway City Council and Mayor Hoare feels this can lead to more lightiong for the facility.

“I believe further floodlights can be rolled out under this fund. Last year funding was provided for lights on the Westside Running Track under this fund.

“This project is expected to commence in the coming months. The new fund can allow for additional lighting on the playing surfaces in Westside Park and South Park to include the full perimeter of both pitches.

“Also lighting could be provided on that Tennis/Basketball Courts at Westside. The Director of Services has invited submissions from Members and I’ll be proposing these projects. A call for funding will soon open and sports clubs will be encouraged to submit funding applications” Mayor Hoare added.
