Galway seven in Olympic bid

Seven Galway athletes take to the water next month in a bid to secure Olympic qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The rowers are part of the largest number of Irish athletes to compete at a 2023 World Rowing Championships for Ireland, which take place in Belgrade, Serbia.

Katie O'Brien and Steven McGowan (both Galway RC ) will have hopes of taking a medal in the para mixed double - Katie already a former bronze medalist at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. And Tribesmen's Siobhán McCrohan is another with her eye on the podium when she competes in the lightweight women's scull.

Fiona Murtagh (University of Galway BC ) and Aifric Keogh (Dublin University Ladies BC ) are no strangers to each other. Boasting a wealth of experience, the pair became household names when they, along with Emily Hegarty and Eimear Lambe, were the first female rowers to win an Olympic medal, finishing third in the finals of the Women’s Four.

Brian Colsh (University of Galway BC ) is a member of the men's quad, while Fionnan McQuillan-Tolan, also with the university club, competes in the men's four.
