Leisureland café latest to join ‘Use Your Mug!’ cup deposit and return scheme

Galway City Council’s returnable coffee cup scheme has gained a new partner with Brazco Coffee Academy in Leisureland becoming café number ten in the scheme. Customers who ‘Use Your Mug!’ pay €2 to ‘borrow’ a fresh reusable cup, which can be returned or refunded in any participating café – saving the hassle of washing between use.

Tiarnan McCusker, Environmental Awareness Officer with Galway City Council said that in October 2022, Galway City Council launched a coffee cup deposit and return scheme with nine cafes in the city receiving free 2GoCups to pilot the scheme, and to encourage their customers to participate.

Customers pay €2 to ‘borrow’ the 2GoCup for their teas and coffees, and can get a refund or swap for a fresh cup for free, at any of the ten participating businesses.

In Ireland, every year we dispose of 200 million coffee cups - that’s a whopping 560,000 each day going to landfill or incineration! There are huge environmental consequences with this in terms of litter, waste and climate.’’

The ten cafés taking part are: Brazco Coffee Academy, Leisureland; Anton’s, Fr. Griffin Road; Mocha Beans, Salthill, Cross Street and Newcastle Road; Roscoe’s, Eglinton Street; The Creamery, Salthill; Rouge, Dominic Street; C’est la Vie, Terryland and Greens & Co, Henry Street.

The Use Your Mug! Campaign is supported by the Local Authority Prevention Network (LAPN ) fund from the EPA and the Waste Prevention Fund.
