Celebrating poetry in Gort this weekend with ‘Letters to the Universe’

The Ploughed Field Collective poetry group in Gort is running a series of poetry events under the theme ‘Letters to the Universe’ this coming weekend as part of Poetry Day 2023.

Events will take place across Gort from Thursday April 27 to Sunday April 30, including the launch of a new collection of local poetry, a poetry slam competition, a reading of poems from famous poets who visited Coole Park, and a poetry reading on the river walk in the town. This programme of events is supported by Poetry Ireland, Galway County Council and Minihans SuperValu Gort.

“We are so excited for the weekend ahead and the programme of poetry events taking place as there is something for everyone,” said Justin McDermott of the Ploughed Field Collective. “There is such a thriving poetry collective here in Gort and south Galway. We are so delighted to be able to celebrate the rich history of poetry in Gort while also giving our contemporary poets the opportunity to read their work.”

The programme commences today (Thursday April 27 ) at 7pm in the home of WB Yeats in Gort, Thoor Ballylee, with the launch of the Ploughed Field Review, a new collection of poetry from poets living in Gort and south Galway. On Friday at 6.30pm a Poetry Slam competition will take place in Hennelly’s Bar in Gort. Saturday April 29 will feature the ‘Poets of the Autograph Tree’ reading in Coole Park at 2pm. Finally, on Sunday at 1pm at the River Walk in Gort, the Letters to the Universe reading will take place, which will feature local poets and special guest poets Mary Medec and Luke Morgan.
