We began the Active School Flag process in September 2021 and got our second flag in January 2023. We were recognised as an “outstanding” school by our Inspector Ita Seoighe. She liked what we had done with our school so much that she decided to invite Minister Hildegarde Naughton to come and see our school.
She came on Friday last with Mayor Clodagh Higgins and other local councillors. We had the best day ever and they were so impressed with our school. Damian Browne came in to raise our flag on Monday. It was amazing to hear his courageous stories.
We have gained so much from our Active School Programme in the Mercy Primary. We got to experience a whole range of sports and activities. The ones that stand out to us are GAA, basketball, tug of war, wall ball, handball, skipping and dancing. Everyone has been having a lot of fun taking part and going to training for these sports. One part we love is travelling to the tournaments on the bus!
We have also learnt the importance of teamwork and respect. It is so important to listen to the captain and your teammates, remain positive and include everyone at all times. We met lots of people from other schools which was great as we might meet them again in secondary school.
Two boys (Benas and Muhammed ) from our school received basketball scholarships from Titans Basketball club. This will give them access to training and other opportunities in Titans. We feel so grateful we got to be involved in this amazing programme.
We all feel we’ve gotten fitter and are much more energetic now. Sports and being active helps your physical and mental fitness also. We also believe that being active is showing positive results in our school work which our teachers are happy about.
