Galway choir changing the definition of choral singing

A Galway-based singing group, RISE Choir is changing the definition of choral singing by celebrating diversity, empowering different voice types, and promoting positivity and connectivity through singing.

Under the direction of Dr Caren Hession, the choir focuses on celebrating all kinds of voices.”‘It’s all about energy, creating an explosive sound and an infectious sense of unity by engaging with the audience so they feel part of the experience,” Dr Hession told the Advertiser this week.

A recent sell out performance at the Town Hall Theatre saw choir members leave the stage to engage and interact with the audience in a fun and playful fashion. Audience members then took to their feet on several occasions, singing and clapping along to choir performances.

RISE Choir meets weekly to collaborate and sing an exciting choice of repertoire from Queen to Sia, Elton John to Lady Gaga, with unique musical arrangements. The result is a celebration of various voices, and not a one voice choral sound.

A community of singers and music lovers, RISE Choir rehearse on Thursday evenings at 8pm at the Corrib Dance Studio in Briarhill Business Park, Galway and perform songs at gigs and events. The choir has also performed at fundraising events for local charities to support Alzheimer’s and Direct Provision Galway.

With the increasing number of recognised health benefits to singing in a choir, including increased social connection, a sense of belonging, friendship, fun and laughter, joining RISE is a great way to reduce anxiety and be part of a powerful community that can literally change lives.

The choir is always open for new members. If you are interested in singing and being part of a fun, supportive and uplifting community then RISE Choir is for you. For further details visit www.risechoir.com or find us @risechoir.
