Regional TDs secure unanimous Dáil support for action on long COVID

Sean Canney Independent TD and Regional Group of TDs have received full support across Dáil Eireann for their motion which is calling for the roll out of specialist services to support those who have not recovered fully after being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. “

“Not only is this a positive step to ensure that immediate steps are now taken to support all patients with long COVID, regardless of where they live, or how they are impacted, but it is also a formal recognition from the National Parliament of the existence of this condition which is having an impact on people in every corner of our country,” he said.

Over the last number of days, Canney and his fellow Regional TD group have heard personal stories not just from their own constituents but from colleagues and their families who are now dealing with this chronic condition on a daily basis.

“While most people will make a full and quick recovery from COVID 19, some adults and children, can continue to experience ongoing symptoms or can have a relapse after an initial recovery, and these symptoms can persist for several months or even years, and we need to support these patients in every way that we can,” he said.

Long COVID is an umbrella name given to a broad range of some 200 post COVID symptoms which include conditions such as chronic fatigue and brain fog, which are experienced at least three months after the initial infection for significant periods of time, in some cases for over two years.
