It is fitting that the person responsible for transforming Eyre Square into a winter wonderland each Christmas enjoys the season of giving all year round, behind the wheel of her Christmas present. Maria Moynihan Lee, MD of Milestone Inventive is the proud owner of a 1975 BMW 525 Automatic —A present from her husband.

First Car — Maria's first car was a more modest, Toyota Starlet (Red ) 1984. Her eyes light up with fondness when she recalls its charm. ' A Japanese Import, it had a unique feature, an alarm sounded when you drove over 65 mph, but I got used to the buzzer and just drove on.' Many cars later, Maria's husband James presented her with Hamish - The BMW. Hamish too was an import, of Swiss origin, already christened. Maria, not wanting to change the name, added Darling, and so it is Hamish Darling.

Soundtrack — In deference to Hamish Darling's age there's a strict car rule. 'it's only 70's' Maria chuckles ' Abba, Bowie, Pink Floyd'. One wonders why not German super group Boney M, Kraftwerk or even Scorpions?

Favourite Journey — When Maria is asked about her favourite journey, her answer is like a politician on Prime Time. Yes, she's glad to be asked that very good question. But her answer is about the destination and toasted ham and cheese sandwiches. Joe Keane's Pub at Maam Bridge. The journey is secondary - it's all about the open fire and the toasties.

Perfect Passenger — It has to be James, Maria responds without hesitation. With a shared love of 70s music, ham & cheese toasties and Hamish Darling, it's a fair answer.

Dream Chauffeur — Surprised and puzzled by that thought of being chauffeured, Maria hesitates, then replies "I'd prefer to drive myself." She backs up her stance by listing how easy the BMW is to drive, the great visibility and comfort, then admits "I like being in control."

Lotto Win Car — As if Hamish Darling was listening and might be offended by the prospect, Maria is quick to point out there would be no replacing of the 1975 Automatic. "I'd have him converted to electric, to prolong his life. He's unique, nothing could replace him."

The Christmas Market opens tomorrow Friday November 11 until December 22. With more than 50 traditional chalets offering food and crafts and gifts, you have to come and see it. www.christmasmarketgalway.com/
