Scramble for precious tickets as countdown to Kerry showpiece begins

The scramble for All Ireland Senior Football Championship Final tickets is well underway in Galway.

Following Saturday’s semi-final success over Derry, Pádraic Joyce’s team will now face Kerry at Croke Park on Sunday July 24.

Galway’s ticket allocation is expected to be in the region of 15,000 which will be divided among GAA clubs throughout the county.

Prompted by John Daly and Damien Comer’s excellence, Galway delivered an impressive second half display to defeat Derry at the penultimate stage. Ultimately it means Galway are now preparing for a first All Ireland senior football final since 2001, when current manager Joyce inspired the Tribesmen as a player against Meath.

A number of fundraisers are being planned ahead of the match, including an event at the Galmont Hotel next Wednesday.

RTE Sport’s Darren Frehill will interview special guests Michael Meehan, Tomás Ó Sé, and Kieran Fitzgerald.

Significant interest has surrounded the fortunes of Galway’s senior inter-county teams in hurling and football, particularly since Covid restrictions were eased enabling large crowds to attend sporting fixtures.

Eager to promote the value of sport, Cllr John Connolly is calling on the Galway City Council to establish a Gaelic Games development officer position.

Speaking following Monday’s meeting of the Galway City Council, Cllr Connolly stated that promoting Gaelic Games in the city was worthy of council support.

“Both the rugby and soccer roles do great work in the promotion of their respective sports and the general promotion of physical activity,” Cllr Connolly said.

“The City Council recently published the draft local economic and community plan. Among the goals of the plan are the creation of a city that promotes the health and wellbeing of all its people, including supporting the development of local sport and physical activity programmes and plans.

“The employment of someone to do this while promoting our national games could help achieve this goal.”
