Senator Crowe welcomes new €1.5bn agri-environmental scheme for farm families

Senator Ollie Crowe has welcomed the new €1.5bn Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES ) which will deliver significant long-term environmental improvements through a payment package to farmers.

The scheme, announced this week by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, will target 50,000 farm families through a range of supports designed to address climate change, water quality, and biodiversity decline.

“This new package for farm families will allow them to avail of qualitative payments depending on assessments of environmental improvements on their farmland,” Sen Crowe said.

“ACRES will address biodiversity decline while delivering important income supports for up to 50,000 farm families through what is the most funding ever committed by a Government to a single agri-environmental scheme.

“Under the scheme farmers across Galway will be supported to directly deliver positive results in terms of climate, biodiversity, and water quality.

“Farm families in Galway have shown themselves to be committed to their role in protecting biodiversity and it’s important they are rewarded for their commitment to the environment.”
