Westside Modular Family Hub nominated for community housing award

Public can vote for this Galway City Council and the Peter McVerry Trust partnership

The Westside Modular Family Hub - the first of its kind in Ireland - has been shortlisted for the Irish Council of Social Housing Allianz Community Housing Awards 2021.

The award is also the first Public Choice Award 2021, giving members of the public an opportunity to support a participating project they feel is most deserved of recognition.

Opened in May 2020, the purpose-built family homeless service was developed by the Galway City Council and the Peter McVerry Trust, in partnership with the Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government, and the Housing Agency.

The facility is designed to temporarily house families while they seek a long-term solution, with the assistance of the Peter McVerry Trust management, which are on site 24/7. It features 15 two and three-bedroom units with kitchen, dining space, and bathroom. There is also an on-site playground.

The city council carried out extensive public consultation and engagement with local residents and local representatives in advance and during the project to ensure all issues of concern were addressed. “As a result, there is strong support from the local community for the development,” said a council spokesperson.
