Canney welcomes progress on Tuam social welfare offices

Work on the former library on Shop Street expected to be completed by October

Social welfare services are close to finally being “under one roof” for north Galway, due to the progress being made on refurbishing the old library on Shop Street in Tuam.

The building is owned by the Galway County Council and has been leased to the Department of Social Protection for use as an intreo centre. The works are being managed by the Office of Public Works, and the main contractor in Finnia Construction. Works are expected to be completed in October.

The works have been welcomed by the Independent Galway East TD, Sean Canney. “The investment of €2.6 million is a major boost for Tuam and north Galway,” he said. “It also will bring back in use a public building in the centre of the town, and bring together social welfare services under one roof.”
