Galway to receive €1.23 million under Additional Outdoor Infrastructure Fund

Footpath widening in Salthill and increasing benches and picnic tables in city parks among measures to be introduced

Galway city and county is to get more than €1.23 million under the Government’s Additional Outdoor Infrastructure Fund, to help ensure a safe outdoor summer.

The money is part of a €13 million fund which will support 234 projects across 30 local authorities in the State. In Galway, this will involve infilling of parking spaces to widen for pedestrians, along with increased seating; increasing benches and picnic tables in city parks; and replacing flexi bollards with planters. In Salthill, there will be the removal of some car parking spaces and the relocation of the taxi rank in order to widen existing footpaths.

The funding has been welcomed by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton.

“It is important the public can enjoy the summer months in a safe manner,” she said. “These projects will play an essential role in making that happen. Whether it’s choosing to walk or cycle on new infrastructure or meeting friends in a designated communal space, these new spaces will enable the public to travel and gather in a safe environment.”

The Additional Outdoor Infrastructure Fund is being administered by the National Transport Authority as part of its overall national funding programme. The funding will also complement other Government initiatives such as Fáilte Ireland’s €17 million Outdoor Dining Enhancement Investment Scheme and the €14 million Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Fund.
