Wastewater treatment plant for city's east side ‘essential’ for area’s economic growth, says Canney

Irish Water set to review east side’s long-term wastewater treatment needs

It is “incredible” that Irish Water is only now set to review the long-term wastewater treatment needs of the east side of the city and it’s hinterlands.

This is the view of Independent Galway East TD, Seán Canney, who was reacting to news that Irish Water is about to carry out the assessment of the Galway Area Drainage Study. He is also concerned that the lack of a wastewater treatment facility for the area of the Ardaun Corridor, located on the east side of Galway city, will hinder its future development.

Prior to the establishment of Irish Water, a site for a wastewater plant was identified, following a feasibility study. However, Irish Water is now going back to an assessment of needs.

“I am concerned at the slow progress in providing this infrastructure, in order to allow the expansion of the county along the Ardaun Corridor,” said Dep Canney. “This corridor is seen as a Strategic Development Area for housing, industrial development, and amenity, but without wastewater facilities nothing will progress. It is incredible Irish Water is only now commencing a review of the plan.”
