€5.6 million contract agreed to support air service to the Aran Islands

Minister Hildegarde Naughton welcomes move to ‘support the sustainability of our island and coastal communities’

A €5.62 million contract for the management of Aerfort Chonamara, has been signed between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Galway Aviation Services Limited.

The company has been contracted to manage Aerfort Chonamara and the aerodromes on the Aran Islands, Inisboffin, and Cleggan for the period 2021 to 2025. The move will support the air service between Aerfort Chonamara and the Aran Islands.

The news has been welcomed by Minister for State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton. “It is hugely important that people living on our islands are given security in relation to ongoing connectivity to the mainland,” she said. “It is vital that we support the sustainability of our island and coastal communities.”

Minister Naughton said air connectivity delivers “significant economic benefits”, helps develop efficient supply chains, and fosters the creation of regional business-hubs, including in tourism.
