Blackrock diving tower in line for major renovation works

Cllr John Connolly welcomes Galway City Council’s appointment of a design team for swimming area

Blackrock diving tower could be in line for major renovation and enhancement works as City Hall is assessing submissions from consultants who are prepared to undertake the proposed works.

The news has been welcomed by Fianna Fáil Galway City West councillor, John Connolly, a keen sea swimmer.

In mid-February, in line with procurement guidelines, the Galway City Council ran a confined competition with consultants who had previously undertaken work for the local authority. The responses received are being reviewed. It is the intention of the council to appoint a design team in the coming weeks.

Cllr Connolly said the work should be assisted by the fact that in 2017, 82 unique submissions were received by the council in relation to various aspects of then proposed rehabilitation works for Blackrock which were published at the time.

“These submissions give valuable guidance to the team now taking on the task of designing the current works,” he said. “Our open sea swimming facilities are seeing a surge in use during the pandemic. There is also a campaign afoot to re-develop the tidal pool in Salthill. It’s definitely an idea worthy of consideration.”
