Council to seek new expressions of interest in Salthill tourist office site after rejecting original proposals

Former Mayor says new call must be ‘carried out urgently’ and a ‘successful applicant put in place’

The Galway City Council will issue a second call for expressions of interest in the Salthill Tourist office site, after the original proposals were rejected.

The council originally received seven proposals. However, after a panel was convened to assess the applications - consisting of the council officials, Fáilte Ireland, and a tourism sector industry representative - none were deemed to be of a suitable quality to select as a preferred proposal.

The council will now undertake a further call for expressions of interest in regard to the location. Also, the council’s tourism officer will engage with the original seven proposals and outline to them the respective feedback.

The announcement of a new callout has been welcomed by Labour Galway City West councillor, Niall McNelis [pictured above]. “It is important this new call is carried out urgently and a successful applicant put in place,” he said. “As part of the city and Salthill tourism/visitor recovery post COVID-19, it is vital this facility is up and running sooner rather than later.”

It is also understood that the tourist kiosk in Eyre Square is to be given a licence to Fáilte Ireland - subject to when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted - that will allow FI to fund external signage and internal fit outs. City Hall’s recreation and amenity department is working on an overhaul of electrical, plumbing, and general maintenance works of the site.
