€1 million in funding allocated to tackle Parkmore traffic problems

Notorious traffic blackspot to get new bus lanes and pedestrian and cycle links

Bus lanes and pedestrian and cycle links are planned for Parkmore following a €1 million allocation to address long standing traffic problems in the area.

Parkmore has gained a notorious reputation as one of the city’s worst affected areas for traffic congestion.

Of the €1 million allocation, €700,000 will be used to provide a bus lane on Parkmore Road and an internal bus route within Parkmore East through to Parkmore West, in accordance with the Parkmore Transport Strategy Framework.

Buses will also be given priority on Monivea Road and Doughiska Road, and cycle access will be provided from Briarhill towards Parkmore Business Park as part of measures which will cost a further €150,000.

Another €150,000 will also be spent on pedestrian and cycle links in Parkmore, which will include the provision of access from the Tuam Road. There will also be bus priority from the Tuam Road to Parkmore East via Galway Racecourse.

'Galway a victim of its own success'

The funding is part of a €12 million investment by her own Department of Transport for sustainable travel in Galway. The measures have been welcomed by Fine Gael Galway West TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton.

“Galway has been a victim of its own success in terms of the transport issues that have arisen in the vicinity of one of its biggest industrial hubs,” she said, “but this announcement is a major step towards relieving the issues that stricken this area for far too long.”

She said traffic congestion impacts on the quality of life of individuals and families, as well as adversely affecting the potential for job creation in Galway. She said: “I am pleased the Department has now been able to allocate substantial funding towards the alleviation of long existing problems in Parkmore.”
