Council marks passing of the former NSW premier Fahey

The Galway City Council held a minute’s silence to mark the passing of the former premier of New South Wales, Australia, John Fahey.

Mr Fahey who passed away on Saturday after a battle with leukemia, was born in Wellington, New Zealand, to Stephen and Annie Fahey who were from Menlo, and was the cousin of Galway city central councillor Frank Fahy and New York State legislator Patricia Fahy.

He was instrumental in securing Sydney the 2000 Olympic Games and served as the president of the World Anti Doping Agency from 2007 to 2013.

He died aged 75 and is survived by his wife Colleen and children Matthew and Melanie, and grandchildren, Campbell and Amber.

The Government of New South Wales said it would hold a state funeral for the former premier.
