O’Donnellan & Joyce charity auction success

O’Donnellan & Joyce auctioneers has supported three local charities thanks to the bidders who took part in the company's charity auction on Friday last. There was enormous interest in the three fantasy lots which went under the hammer on Friday with auctioneer Colm O’Donnellan on the podium during the live streamed event. Three fictional properties were constructed by the auction team for entertainment purposes only, and they sure did entertain.

The event commenced at 12 noon and was streamed through the O’Donnellan & Joyce Facebook page and website as well as through the Essential Information Group platform and Galway Advertiser website. The charity auction was watched live by thousands across the various platforms and a recording is available for your entertainment on the O’Donnellan & Joyce Facebook page where you can also see the highlights of many of the auction house’s previous property auctions which are all live streamed and recorded.

The first fantasy lot that went under the hammer was a thatched cottage located in Roundstone, Co Galway. Bidding commenced at €200,000 and quickly rose to over €300,000 with bids coming in from phone bidders, proxy bidders, and a large number of bidders who took part through the internet bidding service provided by Essential Information Group located in southeast England. A lucky woman from Clarinbridge in Co Galway was the winner of the first lot, bidding to a value of €250,000, which was the pre-determined value set by senior valuers Tony Joyce, Shane McDonagh, and Niall Browne of O’Donnellan & Joyce. The winner of this lot nominated Pieta as her chosen charity and a €100 cash donation will be made to Pieta House by O’Donnellan & Joyce on her behalf.

Pieta provides free therapy to those engaging in self-harm, with suicidal ideation, and those bereaved by suicide. Pieta relies on the generosity of the public whose donations and fundraising make up more than 80 per cent of its income. The charity provides a very valuable service to the community and operates a 24-hour phone and text support service for those who are in need of help. O’Donnellan & Joyce is delighted to make a donation to the charity on this occasion.

Fantasy Lot 2 comprised an architecturally designed detached home situated on the Maree Road, in Oranmore, Co Galway. Bidding opened at €400,000 and very quickly reached the final sale price of €530,000 - but it was not the highest bidder who won the charitable donation. The objective of this charity auction was to guess the accurate valuation of each of the three properties, and the prize for Lot 2 was picked up by a man living in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, who bid up to the value of €450,000. With a large number of bids and great excitement surrounding the event, bidding on this lot lasted for just two minutes with renowned auctioneer Colm O’Donnellan recording bids from phone bidders, proxy bidders, and a large internet audience who were keen on the bidding buttons. The prize donation for this lot will be donated to Cancer Care West whose headquarters are based in Galway but whose services span the nation.

Cancer Care West offers community-based practical and emotional support services, free of charge, to anyone affected by cancer. The charity offers both individual and group support, has a dedicated children's service, and operates a number of residential care and long term accommodation facilities for patients and families of those effected by cancer. It supports families who have a loved one going through long term cancer treatment in hospitals and its accommodation facilities have 24 hour nursing care available to cancer patients.

The final lot of the day, fantasy lot number 3 was a real gem. This six bedroom detached residence located at Rockbarton, Salthill, was noted to be the perfect place to isolate during the Covid-19 lockdown. Boasting superb views over Galway Bay and just a stone’s throw from the Salthill Promenade and Blackrock Diving Tower, this property attracted bids fast and furious with bidding starting at €800,000 and concluding at €1,130,000 – a little above the true valuation of the property but a great price nonetheless. More than 30 bids were recorded from phone and internet bidders who took a real shine to this superb fictional property. The prize donation for this lot was won by a Claddagh woman and her bid of €1,000,000 through her phone bidder, awarded the Galway Hospice the €100 donation.

The mission of the Galway Hospice is to support patients from counties Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon with advanced diseases needing specialist care to attain the best quality of life possible. The hospice is an integral part of the community and provides palliative care with dignity and compassion to patients and families living with life-limiting illness. The Galway Hospice is located on the Dublin Road in Galway city and relies on the donations of friends and family members of those who have received this care to continue to provide these services. The team at O’Donnellan & Joyce are delighted to be supporting this wonderful organisation.

Auctioneer on the day, Colm O’Donnellan, thanked all who took part in the fun charity event. “I would like to sincerely thank the Essential Information Group for hosting the internet bidding and live stream, David Brandt of Brandt Studios for providing the AV support and organising the video streaming, and the wonderful staff of O'Donnellan & Joyce who presented themselves in front of the camera on Friday morning to represent their phone and internet bidders," he said. "I would also like to thank all that supported the event on our Facebook, Instagram, and Linkedin accounts and those who registered to bid. Well done to the winners and well done to the charities that will receive the donations.”

O’Donnellan & Joyce hosts seven live property auctions each year, all open to phone, internet, and proxy bidders and always streamed to the public through Facebook and the auctioneer's website. Unfortunately for many buyers and sellers, the O’Donnellan & Joyce April and June property auctions have been postponed due to the Covid-19 virus but the team are confident that they will be in a position to host a live streamed property auction in or July if property viewings re-commence after the Government restrictions are eased.
