Lockdown views: Kieran O'Malley

Galway City

"I’m really looking forward to seeing my family first of all, and then getting back into my routine. Like most people the lack of sport has been a massive void both watching and playing so I can’t wait to get back to the local and enjoy a great game with a nice cold pint. There seems to be a very positive sentiment towards supporting local business once this ends so I will be supporting as many fantastic Galway businesses as possible once they reopen. Another thing that I’ve missed more than I realised is hugs so my friends and family particularly my two nephews are in for loads when it's safe to do so again.

"I’ve used the time to start watching Netflix which I’ve never really taken time to do before, I’ve also watched every single James Bond movie in anticipation of the new one coming out this year hopefully. Like most people I’ve done more walking around my neighbourhood in the last three weeks than in the last three years. To keep the mind sharp I have taken a number of online courses related to my job, reading and learning Spanish via an app which allows a competitive element which has been extra enjoyable. I have a football pitch within 2km of the house so I’ve been able to practice my kickouts ahead of the new soccer season. Basically I have plenty to keep me busy but I haven’t put myself under any pressure to achieve specific goals, just to keep my mind occupied and off the phone as much as possible.

"Personally, this [lockdown] has been a positive experience. I know it’s very difficult for so many people but I feel this time has been good for me. My lifestyle has always been hectic and this has allowed me to take stock of the important things in life, basic things like cooking were alien to me, in the past I would barely cook for myself once a month, from now on I will certainly making time to continue my culinary concoctions. I suppose in these difficult times I’ve learned to appreciate the wonderful people in my life and how lucky I am in so many ways and not to take any of that for granted as it can all change in an instant."
