Galway – the next steps

We are all rightly proud of Galway, our city and county which, I believe, has all the ingredients needed to be the best place in which to work, study, raise a family, and grow older.

We have top class education centres like NUIG and GMIT. We have employment hubs like the PorterShed, the Galway Technology Centre, Parkmore, among others – all home to local leaders as well as global giants. And we have culture, heritage and our national language in abundance.

Our success has generated its own challenges including transport and mobility, housing and healthcare delivery as well as developing and supporting communities in a sustainable way. Galway is, I believe, at a pivotal point in its development and how we respond to these challenges will shape our city and county for the rest of this century.

The investment has been secured – made possible through our economic growth – the plans are being drawn up and the solutions are within reach. The Galway City Ring Road, which I have always supported and which we approved at Cabinet in 2018, will help reduce the time spent travelling and commuting. By freeing up space in the city centre, we can prioritise cycling, walking and public transport, including the €200 million BusConnects plan for Galway. Completing the greenways, including the Connemara Greenway and the Urban Greenway to Barna and beyond, is also a priority.

Other key infrastructure such as the Sportsground re-development, the €10 million City Museum enhancement, GMIT’s €25 million STEM building, the UHG Emergency Department and Cancer Care Centre, the new Elective Hospital, Aerfort Chonamara and the gteic hubs for our Gaeltacht communities, among other projects, will help transform Galway and deliver the city and county that the people deserve.

Planning is important, but delivery is essential. And to deliver, we need public representatives who will continue to work for Galway, locally and in the Dáil. It has been an honour to serve you as your TD. Please vote Seán Kyne Number 1 this Saturday so that I can continue to work for you and help deliver a vibrant, energetic and prosperous Galway.
