Youth mentors wanted in the county

Big Brother Big Sister, a monitoring programme that matches adult volunteers with a young person aged 10 to 18 years old, is looking for even more mentors to join its team.

The basic idea of the programme is that a friendship will form between the young person and older volunteer and that this will help promote the positive development of the young person.

The young person and the volunteer are matched based on common interests and personality. The 'match' meet once a week for a year and together they decide on the type of activities that they would like to do. Activities include window shopping, coffee and chats, watching a football game, playing sport, listening to music, etc, but it really depends on the interests of the people involved. Full training and support is provided.

The programme currently requires men and women from the following Galway regions: Ballinasloe, Tuam, Loughrea, and Portumna as there are young people in these areas who really want a Big Brother or a Big Sister. So if you live in or near these areas, have a free hour a week to spend with a young person, becoming his/her friend and raising his/her confidence, please call Alan on 086 8524920 or Ciara on 087 7996268, alternatively you can find more information by logging onto www.bbbsireland.ie
