Nolan demands answers over Roscam recreational facility handover

Roscam residents have been waiting too long for a recreational facility for their area and there is a need to get the new centre open in time for the summer.

This is the view of Labour’s Galway City East candidate Derek Nolan. He is concerned about the future of the fenced off nine-acre recreational site in Roscam. He believes there are “serious questions to be answered” and that the facility cannot remain “fenced off and unusable for another summer”.

It is understood that moves to transfer control of the facility from the developer to the Galway City Council will take place within the next few weeks.

According to Mr Nolan there are a number of issues which must be resolved before then as there is “huge uncertainty” as to when, and under what provisions, the facility will be available for use.

“There is a danger that the handover could occur without the necessary preparatory work having taken place by the council,” said Mr Nolan. “The residents of Roscam have been waiting many years for these facilities – further delay is simply unacceptable.”

Mr Nolan has written to the city manager Joe MacGrath requesting action and answers on the following key points: On what date will the council take charge of the facility? What arrangements are in place to manage the takeover? Are all of the developer’s commitments, in terms of facilities and quality standards met?

He also wants to know who will control the facility? What maintenance provisions are in place? Who will maintain the playground? How often will litter be collected? and when will playing pitches be put in place?
