Former Galway hurler Pete Finnerty has added a sporting theme to the newly-refurbished Supermac’s Tuam.

The hurling legend, who first opened the doors of his Supermac’s in 1991, said it was time for a change after 28 years

“We were Supermac’s number 28 when we opened with Pat and Una McDonagh in 1991,” Pete said. “We have made a lot of good friends and had a lot of loyal customers, but it was time for a change. We are delighted with the way things have turned out. There is a real freshness to the place and I think that both our existing customers and newer ones will be impressed with what they see.”

The family restaurant is a real family affair for the Finnertys, with Pete and wife Clare joined by daughters Amy and Lisa, as well as sons Peter, Niall and Alan in the running of the shop. And even granddaughter Molly chips in.

“Amy’s four-year-old daughter Molly loves helping in the lobby,” Pete says, who was widely regarded as being part of one of the greatest half back lines ever to play the game with Gerry McInerney and the late Tony Keady.

The new refurbishment is heavily focused on sport, with eye-catching photos of GAA action.

“We have some great photos, from David Burke lifting the Liam McCarthy to Gary O Donnell lifting the JJ Nestor Cup," he says. " An entire wall upstairs is taken up with a great shot of Joe Canning, and next to it is a shot of my young lad Peter in Croke Park, wearing one of my All Ireland jerseys.”

Not only have there been changes in front of the counter but there have been some changes behind the counter as well.

"We have 15 people working with us now, and since we re-opened after the refurbishment it has been even busier. The photos are a great draw, and with a bit of luck I’ll be putting up some new ones once the summer is over.”
