Canney urges end to high insurance costs

Galway East TD Seán Canney has hit out at anomalies within the insurance industry that are causing financial difficulties for many families and businesses. His call for urgent insurance reform follows a briefing in Galway by Minister of State for Finance Michael D’Arcy.

Minister D’Arcy was meeting business leaders and representatives to discuss how insurance costs are affecting their sector. Deputy Canney said the rising cost of insurance has become an intolerable burden for families and businesses.

“Court awards for insurance claims are hugely inconsistent and are driving up premiums.

“Young drivers are discriminated against to such an extent that many can’t afford their own insurance and are being insured by their parents.”When they eventually get their own insurance, they then get no credit for their driving experience. A blemish-free driving record should be recognised,”he said.
